What are Schottky Diodes? 

A schottky diode, often referred to as a barrier diode, is a metal semiconductor with a fast switching action and an accompanying low forward voltage drop, with a small voltage drop across the terminals when current flows through the diode. 

What are schottky diodes used for? 

Schottky diodes have multiple purposes across electronic and electrical industries due to their sensitivity, precision and efficiency. They are used for voltage clamping, also as preventatives for transistor saturation, and can be used as rectifiers in power supplies to convert current from AC to DC. 

Schottky diodes are used in solar panels and grid connected systems to block high-performing solar panels discharging over low-performing solar cells, and preventing batteries from discharging overnight. 

Why use a schottky diode? 

Schottky diodes are preferred due to their fast recovery time, ultimately resulting in a smaller amount of stored charge that can be used for high speed switches. They feature low turn voltages between 0.15 and 0.45 volts, higher efficiencies and an integrated guard ring to protect internal components from stress, keeping them working harder and smoother, for longer. 

What is a rectifier diode? 

A rectifier diode is designed to rectify alternating currents. It is used to flow currents through a circuit in one direction, in contrast to elements including resistors, and a rectifier’s current has a nonlinear relationship to the voltage across it. 

The diode will be forward bias when positive voltage is applied and will operate as a short circuit to allow the current to flow through the diode freely. It is tasked with converting alternating current (AC) into a direct current (DC) through an application of rectifier bridges.
